Picnic ware for half-price

Since I usually entertain other moms, I've been watching for reusable kid cups. Above, 50-cents for 6 at Walmart.

Here's the secret to buying summer plastics: choose colors which look great all year.

Picture this yellow with the golds and browns at an autumn table...or even the greens and red of Christmas.

Not as fun as the splashy flamingo print, but much more flexible.

Since we have color-coded kid cups at our house, I purchased these same cups - a pack of blue for the boy and green for the girl. Cheap plastic, but if one breaks we have another for back-up.

Now see.. that is why you are a better shopper! I'm always drawn to the blues and pinks but I only get one season out of them. Definitely something to consider next time! Thanks for the tip.

I like the idea of buying colors that work for each season, but I'm the loser who would use the splashy flamingo pink in the dead of winter too...haha...

Who cares what colors you use in what season? Use what makes you happy!

Nice tip. When you think summer cups, bright colors come to mind. Good idea going against the grain!

I bought 2 6 packs of red cups at Target for 99 cents! I was so excited. Love having nice and inexpensive cups for the kids to use.

good idea! I found some little stainless steel cups to use for kids around here.
On a related note, where's a good place to check for plastic picnic plates? Mine were thrown out at the last family reunion - apparently they looked like they were disposable!

Right now Wal*Mart has some really cute plastic plates marked down to $1.25 per plate. These look really nice, no one would know they are not glass. I got several for use in the day care. These are white with red or blue trim. I also got some red and blue cups for .50 for 6 also. I am going to use these as picnic ware for the kids. Roxie

Another option is to buy the generic out of season cups, like some decorated holiday patterns which could be used at any time of the year. I have bought Easter and school themed cups after the "season" was over and they were really cheap.

Plus, these cups are useful when going to a picnic because they can be reused. If you have a group of people over and want to give guests their own cups, different ones can help guests keep track of their beverage and be conversation starters.

I do the same thing with gift wrap and fabric ribbon: buying clearanced items by COLOR for use in upcoming seasons.
