What are we really buying?

I've followed Kristin's 1902 Victorian rehab for a couple of years now, always little envious of her auction finds and fabulous hardware. Now she scrapes off another layer in an essay entitled "Shopping Disease." Read it.

I came across your blog recently and really have enjoyed it. :)
Thank you for posting a link to this essay. It couldn't come at a better time.

Good essay. One summer I did just that, no new books, pedicures, or stuff for myself for three months. I thought it would be good discipline but it was actually very calming. I spent a quiet three months crafting and reading things that I already had...and it was quite a bit! Thanks for visiting my blog and have a wonderful day.

I think it is a disease that is very common in the US. One thing that has helped me some is trying to save money to help the poor.--trying to help families whose husbands are in prison for preaching the gospel or who have been martyred for being Christians.... Also, helping kids in Haiti (the 3rd poorest area in the world)--helps keep spending in perspective. But it is hard for me to find the balancein wanting to create beauty and cheerfulness in the home and yet live simply enough to have money to help others!

Good essay. Reminds me of the book Your Money or Your Life. Thought of your blog tonight at dinner - was about to put green beans and mashed potatoes on the table in the pots they were cooked in, then thought of your posting with the photos of the breakfast table set with grace. Thank you for the inspiration!
