Oh, that reminds me--I have to get my eggs boiled! I tried turmeric and onion peels one year. Too much trouble. I bought a package of egg dye last year after the holiday, when it was super cheap. So we'll use that this year. Besides, there's something about those silly strips of printed cardboard you roll up to nest the egg--and those bendy copper wire egg dippers!
We have several kits which we have bought for 50-75% off at discount stores after Easter and they work just fine (in other words, they have a good shelf life!). We dyed eggs today too. :-)
We just used the Tightwad Gazette recipe: cup of boiling water, teaspoon of vinegar, and some food colouring. Our Squirrelings got some very nice colour effects with those. The only problem we had this year was that the boiled eggs had a very strong smell (as in P.U.)--we couldn't identify just one rotten culprit, so we decided to decorate all of them anyway and just not eat them.
Every year I say I'll do the natural egg dyes with onion skins and purple cabbage, but $1 at a thrift store buys a LOT of outdated Paaz kits!

My grandmother used to dye eggs with onion skins. In the grocery stores where I grew up at Easter you could actually buy bags of onion skins.

ReplyDeleteIf you reboil the eggs the dye will fade and little ones dye all over again. We've spent a whole morning on one dozen eggs and a $1 of dye.
