New Year's Day Black-Eyed Pea Salad

A new baby meal, a new year...

I took Cheap Healthy Good's recommendation for Everyday Food Black-eyed Pea Salad.

This is the time of year to stock our pantries with black-eyed peas (dried, canned, or frozen).

Happy New Year Meredith! That salad looks so good, and so southern. yum.

I'm making boiled custard and introducing it to some Yankees tonight : ) THEN it is Weight Watchers Garden Vegetable Soup for a few days, love the clean feel of a new year and simple cleansing foods.

I LOVE that you include a list of ingredients! One of my children can't eat certain foods and I am always afraid to let him sample things people give us.

Looks great! Black-eyed pea salad is pretty much the only way I'll eat them. All you need now is some collard greens.

Happy New Year!

Happy 2009!

The new mother must not be nursing since the salad contains scallions, peppers and garlic!

Does your family have plans to see in the new year? It always sounds like fun but in reality I am sure I will be sound asleep when the ball drops in Times Square!

Meredith-
That salad looks so delicous!! None of those ingredients ever bothered my babies when I was nursing and I bet the new mother will think it is delicious!! I love that you include the ingredients list. Very thoughtful. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you and your beautiful family. We will ring in the new year with some friends over a friendly game of Texas Holdem' poker. (no money, just chips) We will have pizza, salad, and all the left over deserts that have been frozen. At midnight it will be sparkling grape juice. Hope 2009 brings only good things. Many blessings Roxie

Meredith you amaze me...delivering a meal to a new baby when yours is still so wee! Making invitations, speaking at BlissDom, when do you sleep girl?!

Happy New Year, I'm so glad I found your blog this year!

I am drooling. That is my kind of food. I will be trying it soon.

had an email wondering if that salad is all I brought for the meal--

My brother contributed a roasted turkey breast and I brought side/dessert and delivered, while my mom watched my kids.

A family effort!

Still, having just gone through the infant stage myself, I would welcome even a salad if that's all someone could drop by.

Every little bit is appreciated when you have a new baby!

in the African-American tradition -The first day of the year is a very important meal...On New Year's Day we serve up Black-eyed Peas, prepared by boiling with onions and seasonings/herbs/etc. - Black Eyed peas represent 'good luck' and Collard Greens represent prosperity (green equivalent to money) - It's been passed down since slavery ---
I've made lots of changes to the tradition - put a new twist on recipes handed down from my great grandmothers --- Along with Black-eyed peas, Today there will be Gumbo (crablegs, sausage, shrimp) over rice, cabbage, cornbread, 3 cheese homeade mac and cheese, Beef roast with potatoes and carrots...

Meredith, you inspire me to continue being my best - your blog keeps me going - I look forward to your fresh ideas and inspirations in 2009 -
Your baby boy is so precious - I pray blessings over you and your household in years to come -
(Lamentations has to be one of my fave books of all!)

Yum! This salad looks delicious. Unfortunately, I have a little one with a rather unusual allergy to black-eyed peas! (Allergic to peanuts--a peanut is a legume--can eat all other legumes except black-eyed peas and field peas. Weird, right?)

Can I ask where you get those restaurant take-home containers? Your presentation is, as always, beautiful!

Meredith, thanks for the link! And ditto to what Sarah said about your handwriting. If my print looked like that, I'd type a lot less. :)

Looks great! I thought it looked like a meal in itself. Wish I lived by you when I had new babies!

Well, it would be a good vegetarian meal, I think. I just learned that black-eyed peas have the most protein of all the legumes, more than peanut butter.

Did someone ask about the plastic container?

These are from my Kroger salad bar. I bought the red pepper sliced up there (cheaper than a whole pepper, anyway) so that I could reuse the salad container for giving.
