Chess bites

Busy day, which included trying a new recipe for chess squares. They were so rich, I divvied the squares into bites. Every bit as satisfying, 3 times the yield.

(Updated to add the recipe link. Though this is the classic mix, it is not the best recipe I've ever had for chess squares. I think the cake mix gives it an artificially buttery flavor.)

This is a great idea. Not only is it financially frugal - it can save on calories, too:)

I smile - I have made this recipe for 35 years. My daughter told me about your site. I love it. You are so talented.

Meredith, coming out of lurking mode here -- I haven't had these since college (89 - 92)! They were on the regular dessert rotation at our dining hall and I absolutely loved them. I haven't even heard of them since then, so please give the recipe if you can!!!!! :)

Looks like my Ooey Gooey. Is that vanilla cake mix and butter on the bottom? This is what we make for neighbors during "the holidays."

Is this some kind of regional recipe in the South? I've never heard of "Chess Squares". What are they?

I really didn't think this was the *best* chess square I've ever had. The butter cake mix gives it a slightly artificial butter taste (to my critical mouth, anyway). Here is the classic recipe using cake mix:

Good if you have free-with-coupon cake mix and/or powdered sugar.

Susan, I believe these are a regional baked good. They are sort of like lemon bars without the lemon flavor, or a chess pie, only with a cakey crust.

Very very rich.

I was in Tennessee last month and saw chess pie in a grocery store. I thought, So that's what Meredith makes! I'd never heard of it except on this blog (I'm from New England.) I'll have to try it.

I've never heard of any sort of edible Chess before, living way up here in the Pacific NW. Very interesting & thanks for sharing :)

Try making them using a chocolate cake mix! It tastes like a chocolate pie. Top it with vanilla ice cream....

I much prefer the flavor of chess pie over these chess squares.

They are not exactly the same thing.

Thanks for the tip on making chess squares instead of a whole pie! A few little squares might be for figure friendly than a slice.

Being a MI transplant to TN, I had NEVER heard of any of these chess things until I started reading your blog after I moved here. I took your frugal tip about making some as inexpensive Christmas gifts, and it was then that I first tasted their glorious buttery yumminess!

One of my pies went to the construction foreman who was working on our house, and he looked at me like I had 3 heads when I said I'd never even heard of it let alone tried it up north...
