National Park Service Junior Rangers

We investigated Stones River National Battlefield last weekend.

The free visitor center surprised us: engaging exhibits without the cost or scale of a big museum.

Don't miss the National Park Service's beautiful site for kids. It offers over 50 free activities geared toward history, nature, and our parks.

I love history and museums! When my husband and I had a weekend getaway a few months ago we spent big bucks to tour a huge old castle. The next day we found a fabulous historic site that featured a film, museum, and old house---all for free! I'm always on the lookout for great places like that.

My younger siblings did the junior ranger thing and loved it. I've always appreciated National Parks and hope to take my children to them someday.

I love National Parks as well. Want to make it fun for the kids - purchase a National Parks Passport and they can get it stamped at each park they visit. We've been doing this since our children were born. It's fun for them and nice for us to look at the dates and reminisce about the time we went to this park or that.

We don't have many national parks nearby (save the Great Smoky Mtns).

That's why I was so surprised to see so much NPS infrastructure at Stones River. Now I'm thrilled to have another worthwhile thing to add to our traveling list!

Here's a link to buying a "Passport" to the parks, if anyone is interested:

I was just talking about Stones River this weekend! I took my son to the Carnton Plantation in Franklin on Sat. they were having a re-enactment there but it turned out they were really training the guys. My oldest is all about history specifically the Civil War. I will have to take him to Stones River!

I practically grew up at the Stones River battlefield. We went there so often I could quote the entire informational "movie".

Now that I think about it, that could be where my love of history was born!

What a great Web site. I even found some things my 4-year-old can do. Thanks for sharing.
