Extreme Frugality Now Gourmet

My goodness, we are certainly in vogue.

Gourmet now features an amusing (yet practical) series on Extreme Frugality.

I know that we are chuckling as to what he thinks "extreme frugality." That's just normal living for you and me, my friend. :)

That is too funny! I also had not seen that entry on the chicken and I was amazed. Now that, my friend, is extreme frugality :) Thanks for sharing those links!

I did an interview with a local TV station last week and the cameraman said "frugality is the new black". It certainly is!

So glad that we frugal people are now in style. I have often worried about being in style. (yeah right) I got 2 really great furniture buys at the Salvation Army this week. A beautiful dresser and a round table for my kitchen. I am so tickled with both.

CH-IC-KEN! Recently found a blog that gives 17 different recipes for one whole chicken! The price of chicken is soaring it seems -
Question: SHOULD I BUY FROM A BUTCHER or PREWRAPPED?
People fuss over 'hormones' and all, but truthfully - all chickens have some type of hormone or are fed with hormones through grains -
Even the 'so-called' organic ones!

Thanks for the amazing links!
It's funny to hear a guy talk about grocery prices - my hubby does NOT have clue!

Also, while I'm at it - want to thank you for the link to
'down to earth' - that woman is simply amazing - her words hit home with me and struck a familiar chord altogether!

Getting ready to fly out on bizness - the fam has frozen homeade meals and simple directions for my sister to follow - My hubby is not allowed near the stove - only the microwave on occasion!
lol!

Since when is shopping sales like a normal person extremely frugal. Let him forage for wild foods or dumpster dive and then he can call him himself extremely frugal. Until then he's just shopping like a normal Joe.

Thanks for the links. I just don't think twice when cooking - it must be the way my Mama raised me. We occ. splurge but overall we're frugal. Even my hubs :)

Happy spring break! (right? is it for you?)

In a way, I can relate to the family in the Extreme Frugality series. Compared to how they had been living, it is an extreme shift in thinking. Even if what they are doing now is second nature to the seasoned frugal veterans. Some of us weren't born frugal-minded (I sure wasn't!), so we're taking baby steps. It was only just a few months ago that I discovered I could make my own bread crumbs LOL!

thanks for the cheap healthy good link--typically we don't eat dairy so the classic "stretch a chicken" recipes don't work well for us.

lol That was a great article...I love how he thinks this stuff is so extreme.

1 baked chicken ( baked with onion and celery) in our home becomes chicken and rice , chicken and dumplings and chicken salad .
I use part of a $1 bag of shredded cabbage from the 99 cent store , to help extend the serving portions of the chicken salad .
Each of these meals will yield at least 4 if not more servings . All were purchased on sale or with coupons , or from the dollar store.
1/ 3lb. chicken = $3.00
1/ small onion 1/3 stalk of celery = .60 cents
1/cup of rice = .30 cents
1/can cream soup .50 - $1.00
2/ cups of flour .30 cents
1/cup mayo = .40
1/ tsp. Dijon mustard
1/3 bag of cabbage .30
Total : $5.00 or about .32 cents per serving

My extreme frugality looks just a tad different...but then I guess living in a different country will do that to a person!

Shop without a list? Gasp! I think not. Then again, we don't have specials like that and we don't have coupons. But hey, we have store brand!

Finally, we are in style. :) My friends who have been major spendthrifts for years (& laughed at my frugality) are now asking for advice. Thanks for the link.

I don't agree with shopping without a list or meal plan. I think that gets people in trouble more than shopping with a list. People go into a store without a list, get scattered, and grab things with abandon. Most people can't cook off the top of their heads like that guy, and so they end up with a million things in their cart that don't equal a meal.

For some reason I thought of you as I posted a chicken noodle soup recipe today - were you recently asking for ideas on using chicken? I thought so....or maybe I'm losing my mind...entirely possible ;)

Anyway - I have a really yummy homemade chicken noodle soup recipe posted today. Simple, delicious, and pretty inexpensive to make. Thought of you and all your delicious looking home-cooked meals:)
