Making a "pumpkin"

I can't buy as many pumpkins as I'd like. I keep thinking I'll invest in enough realistic foam copies to fill windowboxes. Until then, I'll make what we have do double-duty.

We wrapped this flat basketball in strips of leftover orange fabric. No fancy technique, just wrapping and tucking, with plaid fabric leaves and a stick for a stem.

I'd like to add some fabric-wrapped "gourds" to this fireplace basket. And real fall leaves, if they ever turn colors!

Next up: balloons from yesterday's free festival become a paper mache pumpkin pinata. Paper mache is a frugal family's best friend!

  3. I have a flat basketball! Now I know what to do with it.
I have some pumpkins made from big foam balls that were in the center of some yarn balls my daughter got on clearance. I need to find my pictures and put them up.

  9. ....hmmm.. I wondered where that old red/black basketball went to. It's been days since I had to move it out of my way to pull into the driveway!! Cool project!

  10. This looks terrific! Very creative. I would never have guessed that this was born from a desire to "make do" and not something you had planned all along. :)

  13. I KNEW I saw this here! I loved this idea, and was completely tickled when I saw a "mini" version last night.
Taking a extra fabric piece, a little friend of my daughter had wrapped up an unused toilet paper roll and placed a stick and a plastic "ivy" in for the leaves. I immediately thought of this post. :)
