Cheap molasses

Molasses is another seasonal baking ingredient. Last year, I lamented Aldi's price increase (to $1.79 for 16 ounces). In the end, I found the best price at Big Lots ($1.50/16 oz.)

According to my quick photo, Gordon Food Service sells a gallon of blackstrap molasses for $7.89. In comparison, Aldi's small bottles work out to $14/gallon and Big Lots, to $12/gallon.

They have many more items then what they place in their store so be sure to ask if you are looking for a deal on something in bulk. In my area they also offer $5 off $50 pretty often. I'm lucky that they are next to favorite grocery store so I can get everything in one trip :)

I have to inform you of the absolute unfairness of your posting about GFS...we don't have on here and I am fighting the little green monster...especially for the BLACK STRAP MOLASSES as it is a must in my bread recipe...sad for me...

If you are willing to do some comparison math using Aldi's as your baseline, GFS can provide some good deals.

GFS is the cheapest source we've found for Splenda packets. We also buy their California-style tomato sauce in #10 cans, precooked bag bacon (very low in fat), and frozen vegetables. Some of their spices (curry, Italian seasoning) can be a good deal also.

Oh the envy!!!

We use molasses when our mules need medicine. We crush it (if applicable) and mix it and molasses in with their grain. The love it and lick every bit up.

Just wanted to update ALDI Molasses prices. As of 12/6/2012 a 12oz bottle of Baker's Corner Molasses at ALDI is $1.89 or $20.16 / gallon. That is a 44% increase in ALDI's price since the original post.
