It's been fun to see how you have turned something that could be very negative into something positive.

(Plus you are doing a great job of utilizing Cindy's (of Cindy's Porch) philosophy of "DO instead of BUY" and "Shop at home first" !!!)

Your tomatoes look delish. Out tomatoes have burned up in the hot Texas sun. I am going to pull my plants up and plant some more so we will be getting some fall tomatoes. We love our slasa and our tomato sandwiches here in Texas. Roxie

I hope I'm not sending multiple comments; they don't seem to publish. Trying again:

I really am excited by your challenge. Please post ways that you are making do.

Once we resorted to eating from Costco samples for one meal when we were up against the wall, financially speaking. Sad, but true. We could have spent money, but I was too stubborn to go over budget during that time.

Maybe you could post a note at church or in your neighborhood (or on craigslist or freecycle) offering to barter for specific garden veggies? You could offer some of your thrift scavenged treasures or even a service (flower arranging) in exchange for fresh food. At church last week, someone was giving away produce they couldn't eat from their own garden.

I thought in this heat my toms were done growing.. I just discovered SEVEN more on the plant! This was my first attempt with potted ones. Based on Hubs calculations we needed to produce 2 for it to be cost effective. With the 7 on the vine now, we have had 16 this year! Oh I am SO doing this again next year!

Thanks for stopping by my blog, it was so neat to see a new face! I just bookmarked your blog because I like your sweet and short posts, and all the great links! We, too, have a very tight budget and use a "cash/envelope" system. Here's to kindred spirits!

What a great affirmation.

Seeing that picture reminds me that I need to start on my tomatoes soon - it'll be my very first time growing them...!

You mentioned a cash budget... just wondering...do you take out cash for all your expenses?

Thanks for the inspiration.. would love to see how you are making do with meals this week.

Your posts about this are very inspiring! My husband and I are stretching things this month too. Getting paid once a month + medical bills = stretching until next Friday. Thank you for your posts on this!

Cat commented above that her family was blessed by Costco samples for a meal! This is something many people do. It is actually a good idea for a cheap date. My husband is a Costco career man and our family is always in seeing what they have to sample. Their food court is also a cheap way to eat out if you need or want to. We can feed our family of 6, with everyone leaving the table full, on around $10. Granted this isn't health food but for an occasional treat, the kids love it.
