Tiny potted ferns at the grocery checkout were calling my name. "Buy me! My rabbits-foot fronds are delicate and springlike. You need me in a dainty cup on your bedside table."
Only the few dollars left in my grocery envelope kept me from grabbing one of each. When January's gray skies arrive, I need a touch of green around the house. Since I can't afford house plants this month, I decided to improvise. These cheerful containers peeked out of my cabinet.
You can use any container that holds water, from terra cotta to tea cups. I snipped a few handfuls of a glossy shrub in my front yard.
Adding the clippings to water makes an instant, if temporary, "houseplant." I placed one at my writing table in the breakfast room.
The calico cup adds a fresh note to the bathroom counter.
There! Now I can breathe again.

I saw this weekend at Lowes (the home depot type place/rival) that they had a whole rack of clearance discounted plants in the greenhouse section. Ivy, ferns, etc that are "less than pretty" for like .25 each. Basically if you have a green thumb you could nurse them back to health.
I love your idea! I get the winter blahs too. I miss the greenery with spring & summer. However its been so dad-gum warm here in NC that my daffodils are blooming already.
I don't have a green thumb, at least not for houseplants, but I did pretty well with a sweet potato in a jar last January, so we're do it again this year. Great preschool science activity, too!

I have lots of baby spiders (plants that is). they would look so cute in little cups or something. Hmmm...
I wonder if they would survive the trip if I mailed you some?
