Shoestring Christmas: mailbox decorations

Did you hear about that crazy lady in the neighborhood? Yes, the one rattling around in the old station wagon. She was cruising our street, grabbing shrubs from people's brush piles. In broad daylight, with her kids in the car! I tell you what, some people have no shame.

Guilty! But I ask you, who could resist an armload of freshly cut BOXWOOD? Branches of holly loaded with glistening red berries? The chipper truck was swiftly advancing. Someone had to rescue those clippings!
But what to do with all of it? Here, everyone likes to swag their mailboxes with tasteful bundles of greenery. The only problem is this slippery plastic mailbox. Ha! I scoff at challenge. Mrs. MacGyver will simply bend two coat hangers into a saddle over the top. No wire? No problem. I can weave two fir branches into the coat hangers on each side.
Uh oh. My coat hanger is showing. Better add some boxwood sprigs to cover the bald spot.
That boxwood is a bit fluffier than I thought. Perhaps I should stop now.Nah. It just needs some bright holly berries to distract the eye. Yes, yes, more holly. My husband didn't mention my incredible masterpiece over dinner.

He did ask if I'd recently ordered a Chia mailbox.

Good thing the chipper truck hits MY street tomorrow.

It is pretty! I have a holly bush that I clip off of as well as using any greenery from our bushes and then Christmas tree clippings. It is so pretty, but free! Oh, and I am the crazy lady in our neighborhood that walks down the street with a basket collecting pinecones!

Sounds like your DH and mine would get along in the sarcasm department :)

hahaha! chia mailbox indeed : )

I trimmed my hollies to fill urns with the clippings (my urns still have full dusty miller from summer that is doing great in our mild-so-far winter...then at the grocery, noticed they are selling a HANDFUL, about 4 sprigs, of holly for $7.99 each!!!

Oh, no I'm going to take the greenery down. Every time I look at it I see that Chia head from the TV commercial!
Just put the pictures up so you can see I make as many mistakes as I do successes!

Don't take it down...it looks so pretty! I keep driving around the neighborhood, eyeing trees that I can "borrow" from. Maybe I'll just stop, knock on the door, and ask if I can have just a twig or two.

Also, if you see an O-L-D silver volvo wagon clumpity-clumping down the Crieve Hall roads (with a Titans sticker on the side) honk and wave...that's my dad.

I was just thinking about all that TIME you spent just to have to take it all apart today.

But it was a good idea.

Oh I love the chia remark and I wish I lived in your neighborhood- cause I would have done the exact same thing as you. I come from a long line of trash pickers- as my mama says.
Viva la cheap and free!
