A magical moment

For over a year, Andrew has been able to sound out words, but he's lacked fluency--or the motivation to develop it. I haven't wanted to push him, especially when baby arrived. ("But if I can read, you won't read to me anymore...")
This week, he made a breakthrough. We were lying on my bed looking at books when he told us to close our eyes and imagine we were back in the days before television. Then he started narrating with expression. He read twenty-five pages before we made him stop. Last night I went in to turn out his light. This is what I saw.

This is my entry to win a camera in the "Capture the Educational Moment" Contest sponsored by Spunky and Academic Superstore. I published this post earlier in the week, but when I heard about the contest, I realized this was perhaps the perfect photo : )

Congratulations to Andrew!! It looks like he has discovered that being able to read for himself opens up a whole new world!! Wow, with your little guy's imagination, and the world of books, you are in for many wonderful future inventions!! Good job, Meredith!

What a dear little soul. And when you have a child who loves to read, you are way ahead of the game! (BTW, please tell him I was reading to my boys when they were quite big and could read for themselves! It isn't the reading itself...it's the nice time you have together!)

My first two reactions were "that's a keeper!" and "awesome," so funny that others said it before me.

we still read to our gangly-legged kiddos. And they read to us, too.

Ah, Andrew, it is one of life's great pleasures to fall asleep amongst more books than you can finish : )

Congratulations Andrew, and Meredith. His love of reading is a tribute both to the enrichment and opportunity to learn you gave him, as well as the pressure you didn't. Yay!

That is awesome! My son is just starting to read and I look forward to the day that he really wants to do it on his own like this.
