Tomorrow my 5 year old bakes his first pumpkin pie. We need 2 for a potluck, and I thought it was worth the added cost to bake them from scratch.
Don't worry--I'm not going to go wild and buy the brand name ingredients! In case Aldi's canned pumpkin didn't have the recipe on its label, I double-checked Libby's Pumpkin Pie online.
Wow! Libby's offers 3 free baking tutorial videos: pumpkin pie, pie crust, and pumpkin roll (along with FAQ questions about the recipes.) Did you know a whisk is the recommended utensil for stirring pumpkin pie? A mixer can overbeat the batter.

I LOVE pumpkin pie in ways that are very special :)
I always use a whisk - but, I didn't know about the mixer part! Hope you have fun!
Meredith,
Next year try it from "scratch-scratch" and use an actual pie pumpkin. It isn't that time consuming. You can cook the pumpkin in your microwave in about 20 minutes. I'm not saying that you'll want to make every pumpkin pie this way but it is a fun thing to try and a neat skill to learn. Your little guy will love scooping out the pumpkin guts. My only suggestion is to have your DH on hand to cut up the pumpkin. Here is the link to my experience and the link to the directions. http://modernchristianhomestead.blogspot.com/2007/09/fall-is-here.html
Have fun!
Using a whisk makes the pumpkin filling more fluffy too! Great Post :)
and the whisk keeps the arm muscles strong ! Nothing better than a multi-purpose item
Interesting, never knew about the whisk! I am sure it is a lot less messy because my pumpkin pie filling splatters when I mix it with a beater.
Thanks for the tips!!
How fun for your kid!
That's really exciting that he's doing his fist baked good.
I think I might have to get my girls in the kitchen for a little Pumpkin Love.
whew! When you said scratch I thought you meant you were baking a real pumpkin, not canned! Thank goodness!
I'm confused - added cost?
I too thought that you would be baking it with real pumpkin, not canned. I've never had a problem making pumpkin pie far cheaper than buying, and the taste is so much better too!
You can buy Libby's pumpkin in January cheap. I still have 2to 3 cans in my cupboard. I thought that it was an ok deal last year, I had hoped to find it cheaper. But this year with fuel prices, the on sale pumpkin is almost double what I paid in January. That sure ruined my price book.
Enjoy the cooking! I find it harder to cook with my 4 year old because I want to get it done, but she learns so much and gets some good mommy time when I let her help.
