Good books, good times

We checked out Little House In The Big Woods on CD for a short car trip. Neither Andrew nor my husband had read it, but they were quickly converted. The audio version is beautifully narrated by fellow Tennessean Cherry Jones.

Wouldn't you know we stumbled upon the complete set of the Rose Years by Roger Lea McBride at Goodwill later that day? Now, to finish saving up for Melissa Wiley's unabridged Little House prequels!

We read the Little House books but never realized the Rose Years existed! (Where have I been? LOL) Thanks so much for posting this!

We have been reading the little house books aloud since the beginning of the summer-- we are now most of the way through By the Shores of Silver Lake-- the boys have loved it. Enjoy!

Thank you for posting this link. And what a great find at Goodwill!

We've also borrowed a couple of the Little House books on CD that Cherry Jones narrated and really enjoyed them. She also did Because of Winn Dixie and my kids loved that one.

I adored the Little House books when I was in elementary school. Then when I taught second grade, I read them to my class after lunch just like my second grade teacher. When my students reached the fourth grade, the librarian told me they were all checking out the books to read again on their own. I hope to read them to my grandchildren when they get old enough. I also did not know about the Rose years. Connie

Meredith, I have all of the unabridged prequels (Paperback) but one...need to check which one is missing. Would be happy to gift them, if you pay for postage.

My nieces adore the Little House books. And I think it's a great way to keep them connected to their American roots (they live in England). I'd love to send them the prequels, but books are expensive enough without adding in overseas postage! Actually, there are a lot of books I'd like to get them...

It's so nice to introduce a well-loved book to someone and find that they love it, too! I recently checked out the audio version of my favorite book for my husband to listen to in the car on his commute. He grumbled about it at first, but he wound up loving the book, which made me happier than you can imagine.

As an adult, I just discovered the Little House Books and read all of them this summer! I also read the biographies of Laura Ingalls Wilder and Rose Wilder Lane. Very insightful, along with the letters Laura wrote to Manly when she was in San Francisco visiting Rose during the Pan Pacific Exposition.
Fun reading all around!

I just gave all my Little House Books to the library for resale, it was hard to let them go, I admit.

I remember reading the "Little House" series when in elementary school and have recently begun reading them again.

I'm slowly collecting them and hope to have the entire series, including the Rose, Charlotte and Martha series eventually.

Yesterday, Hubby & I went to Half-Price Books for the first time. I found a nice used copy of "The Long Winter" for only $2.50! (Can't ever seem to find any good stuff at our local Goodwills! :-( )

We have read every book ever written about Laura and her ancestors. We are a bit obsessed to say the least. Even taking a family vacation to SD to visit De Smet. The whole series is just wonderful!

I read the whole series myself when I was pregnant with my first daughter. The whole thing is a delight; I really should read the other series'. I think about it every time I walk by them at the library. I think I will begin checking them out.

We adore Jones' audio versions, and I have to say that I would much rather have her read the (somewhat tedious to me)descriptions of Pa building a door and everything else that he builds and that Laura describes than read it out loud myself. I have often thought that Laura's writing ability and attention to detail were developed in the years when she was "Mary's eyes."

Mrs. Pivec...how insightful to think of her writing being so precise in her descriptions because she was "Mary's eyes"...I never thought of it that way!! Thank you all for all the good book reviews. Meredith, I never cease to be helped by your observations and ideas you pass on to us. You are all so bright and helpful at such young ages!

I'm a big Little House fan. For the lady who was interested in the audio books, I recently discovered that I can download audiobooks from our library's website. Maybe it would be the same at other libraries. Our family has visited several different Little House sites: DeSmet, SD, Independence, KS and Mansfield, Mo. All of them were worth the trip!

My kids love the little house books. There is also a little house cookbook that recreates the foods mentioned in the book. My children have really enjoyed making pioneer meals!
