PBS' Word Girl

My 5-year-old just used the word "cumbersome" out of the blue. I asked him if he knew what it means. He gave the the correct definition, then called me "timid" for being scared to look it up myself.

He had just watched a short preview of Word Girl. The new PBS show airs September 3rd. Here's to more "free" TV programming that works!

My oldest LOVES the Word Girl clips and is looking forward to the show -- just a heads up ... they have all the clips on the PBS Kids website too (www.pbskids.org -- FREE!).

That is funny! We don't have TV, our TV doesn't even have a tuner for local channels. But I could look for those clips online. By the way, this is one of my favorite blogs. You teach such beauty in simple ways. It's inspiring.

My oldest has been watching word girl online for a while but she doesn't seem to learn a lot from it. She likes the stories. The show that she is learning from is Super Why which is only online.

Thanks Meredith. I just tivo'd it for my daughter. I'm so sick of Curious George and Diego.

I am a licensed child care provider. (state of Texas) I too am tired of Curious George and Diego...We (day care children) watch little TV here, just while I am busy with meals etc. Maybe an hour a day...but I do listen to WHAT they (the children) talk about. All I hear is Dora, Diego, and Scooby Doo....so I guess the TV is on at their home a lot. I like to see children involved in their activities, not watching someone else on TV....I do use TV when we have bad weather. I try and keep it to a couple of hours a day but I run out of activities for in the day care room play. Thanks for the tip on this program. I will watch for it. Roxie

Wow! It's not to hear him pick that kind of thing up instead of the unfortunate words!

Thanks for sharing!

He's a special boy. Plenty of children would watch the show without absorbing new vocabulary.

I've already asked you once, but can't remember how you answered. What's your plans for his formal education? Your informal education has set a very high standard. Good job, Momma!

Yup, my Rachel is picking up some big girl words from that show. My girls also get a lot out of Little Einsteins - it's not uncommon to hear them humming a little Mozart or Beethoven while they play! There ARE a few worthwhile shows out there - you just gotta look!

That is so funny! I love it when my son says things like that. It makes me laugh. Thanks for letting us know about the show. I am going to set my TiVo.

My 7yo watches Word Girl online occasionally and she gave us the low down on her new vocabulary not to long ago. "Demolished" was one of her new words and she used it in the correct context by describing her and her sister's room. I'm hoping that someday she will be able to use the word "immaculate" in the right context as well. Sigh.

I love this show for it's humor, and I'm 21. In the first episode, the show made a reference to Internet culture by using "1337" as the password for secret lair.

There are some shows that, as an adult, I can enjoy with my 5-year old. This one makes my list-- when will they put them out on DVD????!!!?? It's so clever, witty, and sharp that kids that like to learn really soak up some great words, excellent situations to use them in conversation, and plus laugh a bit.
