Fancy crayons

These madeleine pans are two of my grandmother's which I was lucky to buy back from my aunt's yard sale. Since I don't bake cookies as often as I used to, they've been gathering dust in my cabinet.

Until I saw Kara's brainstorm. The sun was so hot, her kids melted old crayons in the fanciful tins--outside. I know we've all seen that crayon recycling tip, but I'll bet you've never seen it interpreted so beautifully...

And what a great gift idea! I know a little girl who would love fancy crayons and a princess coloring book:)

Do you think it would be o.k. to spray the tins with nonstick spray first? I'm worried about getting the crayons out of the tins. Thanks!

Yes, if you go to the link, she gives instructions, including the advice to grease the molds first.

Mine are still baking in the sun as I type!

Wouldn't these be cute packaged like faux candy or gifted inside a Whitman's Sampler box?

Ooh thank you, those were beautiful!

Meredith, I thought you might want to get the word out about a newer recall on more Matell toys. I have some of them, and now I am really re-thinking our toy choices again.

I was thinking they might make good molds for colored chalk, too. I remember a recipe in the Thightwad Gazette book - it might make a good gift for a teacher.

These are beautiful and what a great idea! I love making these crayons and the broken ones don't bother me as much as they used to now that I am utilizing the pieces.

I wish I had that tin- too cool!

Wow, Meredith.

Even though my kids are too old for making crayons, I still learn something from your blog entry -- madeleines.

Now I have another thrifting quest: madeleine pans for the kids to make fancy treats with.

When you write a new blog entry, it's like a present I get every morning. Thank you.

I'm dying for pans like yours! Though I must admit, more for the fancy cookies than the fancy crayons. I do love all of your ideas on re-appropriating. My summer with my daughter has been quite a bit more fun using several of your suggestions on creative play. Thank you!

Out in the sun sounds better than in the oven. The crayons actually stink when melted in the oven!!! Great tip, beautiful pans!!

awwww, thank you! you are so sweet to mention us and our little sunmelted crayons :-)

And, yes, I would say spray them with non-stick first helps to get them out (if only I could somehow non-stick spray the car for the times we accidently make crayons in the cupholders or on the upholstry LOL) Also, banging on the tins upsidedown with a wooden spoon helps to get the crayons out, too.

Best wishes!
