Painting from the FREE pile

My mom and I detoured for a yard sale on the way to Big Lots. The owners had quit for the day, leaving a small pile by the curb with a FREE sign. We scrambled out of the car.

My mom asked me if I wanted this old canvas. "Sure," I said, busy with a box of books. "Put it in the car."

We laughed uncontrollably, guessing my husband's reaction. More yard sale art! But the more I looked at this flaking amateur oil (dated 1958), the more I liked this funny cactus flower. Its background even picks up the Turkish blue in my living room rug.

What do you think? Too tacky for words, or a FREE pile keeper?

Well, since the paint is flaking, I think I'd scrape it and let your kids paint over it.

I really like it, but like Jora, it is a little too worn to look good much longer.

Did you know that thrift store/yardsale art is HUGELY collectable - there are many books written on the subject - they are orignal one-of-a-kind - so much better that repro. dont you think.

Personally I really like the blue colour. I say, put it on your wall and keep as long as you can stand it. When you tire of it, take it down and let the kids make a new painting.

I like it. The colors look great with the rug.

I like it. The colors are great and the flakiness gives it character. I say hang it up until it gets too messy or otherwise tiresome for your taste. As for husband, if it jumps out at himand he doesn't like it he will likely let you know in a joking way...if it doesn't catch his eye, so be it.

It's not my favorite painting that you own, but it isn't precisely hideous. I think I'd keep it around long enough and think about it. I have one painting I have a love/hate relationship with. I'm not sure whether it will find a home in our new house or not yet.
