Food from afar: Mennonite Market

Before I lose my internet connection today...

We made a stop at the Metter Farm Market, the salvage grocery I mentioned earlier this year. I loved these farm bouquets on the counter. In fact, I'm kicking myself for not buying one. At least the photo was free!

Unfortunately, on-site bakery was no longer operating. I couldn't find as many grocery deals as last time, either. I did stock up on Pria Carb bars 10/$1 and on convenience foods for the rest of the trip. I tore myself away from the apron display and the Mennonite cookbooks.
Here's the big news: so many of you asked for directions last year, I wrote them down this time! From I-16, exit 104, Metter, Georgia: Exit heading north on GA 23/S. Lewis St. Turn right on East Broad/SR 46 toward Statesboro. Metter Farm Market is less than a mile away, next to Fred's Discount Store. Less than 5 minutes from the exit.

Unlike many Mennonite markets, this store does not sell bulk grains and spices. I'm not sure I'd make a special trip to shop here, but it's a good local resource with loads of fresh produce and sausage. For a quick Interstate 16 detour, Metter Farm Market can't be beat.

We go by a market like this whenever we go to Atlanta. I always wish that I were home so that I could buy more. They always have such beautiful produce and flowers!
And, thanks to your posts about this subject, I am going to go to a Mennonite market that I just found out about in our area, next week. I can't wait to see if they have the bulk grain and spices, etc, like you have mentioned in some of your posts!

I see the cookbook I wanted, and I see some homeschool materials on the bottom self. Ds used that Rod & Staff Preschool/K book.

My dad brought me some Mennonite jam a few months ago from a Philadelphia Mennonite market. So good!

Have a good weekend and trip.

My goodness :) ya'll were practically in my backyard :)

I nearly cried when I found out that the market would be closing their bakery section come this past January...only a month after we first visited there...and I had the best gingerbread man cookie of my life :(

(I'm hoping that enough people will ask & they'll open back up :)

I don't know how far you are from Montezuma, Georgia but there is a Mennonite Store there that sells spices, flour, candies, etc. They have wonderful prices on spices. I don't normally buy spices at the grocery store. I looked at our local Piggly Wiggly the other day for Cream of Tartar $3.55 and I got it at the Mennonite store for $1.50. I buy my bread flour their also. Also within a mile of the store is a pick your own strawberry farm that has homemade cakes and sandwiches. There is also a Mennonite Rest. and Bakery. They have homemade breads, cakes, pies and cookies. Also in the area is Chase Farm Market that has fresh corn right out of the field, and peas. Brown's Market has fresh peaches in season. We are also located within about 7 to 10 miles of The National Prisioner of War Museum and Andersonville Prison in Andersonville, GA. Thanks for posting the water park in Statesboro. We sometimes go to Statesboro for the weekend when hubby has to work there and this sounds like a fun place to visit. We normally have season passes to Dollywood and Dolly's Splash Country but I don't beleive this year we will spend the money with gas being so high. Loved your blog. Debra

We have been to Muddy Pond in Tn close to Crossville. They have something for everyone.
The Delano TN store is good for fresh produce and some bakery items but nothing like what they had at Decatur(TN). We were hoping to find something in North Ga. around Dalton but guess we are out of luck.
God bless.
