I discovered these colorful Hallmark Expressions bags when I was helping a friend assemble bridesmaids' gifts.The Walmart shelf tag said 5/$1, but they rang up at 15 cents apiece. Lunch sacks are perfect for favors or any small gifts, like paperback books.
I know, I know, the die-hard tightwad would use the comics, but I happen to think nice wrapping enhances a modest gift.
I have used cheaper brown paper lunch sacks with red gingham ribbon as packaging for Christmas gingersnaps. Fold the top down and punch two holes in the top for a ribbon closure.
A nice knot uses less ribbon than a bow and looks just as cute!

I do like your idea of using pretty lunch bags for gift bags-I don't think there is anything wrong with spending a bit extra to make a modest gift look nice. After all, when someone is frugal to begin with, it really is just a bit extra!

i use the pretty lunch bag trick often....and you are right, the bow is just as cute, less ribbon, AND IT ACTUALLY STAYS TIED.....

For Christmas I have taken brown lunch bags and stenciled them for gift bags. Doesn't take much time and the look really cute.

I love paper bags and those ones from Walmart are wonderful. I still think they are a great frugal choice, particularly compared to the expensive Hallmark bags. The ribbon is a lovely touch too. I actually use the brown bags and stamp them and then loop the ribbon through. I have collected some neat stamps when going to all those garage sales and I am getting a really nice collection going of those.

I cut up brown paper grocery sacks to use as wrapping paper. Then (at the last second before going to the place where I will be giving the gift), I go out into my yard and cut whatever looks good. This always includes a sprig of rosemary. I tape the flowers to the package and then wrap the whole thing with some real fabric ribbon, which you can wait and buy rolls of on clearance. (Red and green ribbon go great with the brown bags during Christmas.)
People always feel like they are getting a specially-wrapped package, even though it's just garbage bags and weeds.
