International market

(original photo edited for privacy) An errand took us to a new part of town this morning. We stopped at a different international market while we were there. The produce selection was greater than the World Market, with cheaper prices, too. Andrew fished the camera out of my bag and snapped a few shots, pictured below. Fresh herbs of every kind were marked either 2/$1 or $1/bunch. We marveled at the peppers of every kind, not to mention tall bundles of sugar cane.I'll be making leek soup with the $1 bundle I purchased. Not so sure what we'll do with the cactus leaf, other than dissect it for entertainment.
Let's just say it was well worth 22 cents of nopales to keep Andrew from the humongous aisle of foreign candies. We checked out some desert plant books at the library on the way home.

Cactus is very good. You can clean it of all the pricklies and then chopped along with tomato, onion and lime juice for a Pico de Gallo type salsa. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
I love reading your blog daily. Enjoy your new found food.

Awesome on the cheap prices for herbs. I would love to cook with fresh herbs more often, but haven't found a place with a good selection and the right price.

I will have to show my 9 year old the cactus. He just read a story about cacti for school and he wondered about people eating them.

We love cactus around here. They are great in eggs for a Mexican Breakfast (I actually make Mexican Breakfast 2-3 times a month since my husband loves it so much!)
Peel and cut into smallish strips. Like the size of a french cut green bean. Saute in a little oil with some garlic and onions (or shallots since you've got 'em). When they are tender, pour in some beaten eggs.
Serve with salsa and soft corn tortillas. We make it a meal by cooking up chorizo (I use Soyrizo, tastes the same, less fat) and potatoes.

In Mexico I ate Cactus casserole with cactus, rice and hamburger mixed together. It was very tasty.
