Can't Talk, Must Clean

I was not at all surprised when my doctor told me I was already dilated to 2 cm and almost completely effaced this morning. Why else would I awaken at 4 am with an unparalleled urge to clean? Even if I remain at this point until 38 weeks, I need to make sure that I never leave the house in the morning without having everything picked up, washed, and put away.

But then, isn't that exactly what I always say I want to do?

Ah...the nesting instinct kicking in. The night before our daughter was born I was vacuuming until one in the morning.

How exciting, Meredith!! The big day is finally almost here, ready or not! Can't wait to see and hear news of the arrival of your little one!

Meredith - I felt the same way and had a spotless house for about a week and a half before Jack got here (although I was still weeks from being due). But then I got really sick and in the space of a long weekend the house was destroyed. Which, you guessed it, is exactly when I went into labor. I actually put off going to the hospital (convincing myself it was just braxton hicks) so I could clean! Thank the Lord, I called a friend to let her know I couldn't take dinner to another couple who had just had a baby and told her what was going on. She made me call the doctor and still tells everyone that I'm such a fastidious housekeeper that my baby was nearly born beside the road:) The moral, of course, is clean your house if you can, but if you can't that's okay! Having a baby is definitley the more important job!

How exciting Meredith! But as one who learned the hard way when my baby was born a bit early (36.5 weeks) and come home to a hosue I had been cleaning/helping to remodel rather than resting, I hope you remember to put REST as your true #1 priority. Even though taking care of your household is your chosen work, it is something that others can help with if necessary or can go undone--but the contractions and pushing are your work alone! not to mention breastfeeding! Good luck and best wishes!
