Add Elegance With Amateur Art

I am a big believer in this philosophy of home decorating.

Since I am an artist, I'd like to add to this comment. I heartily agree that original paintings in a home add significantly to the decor. In fact, I would scrimp on other things in order to buy art.
Now, a few hints on getting good art inexpensivly. In addition to the ones mentioned (thrift stores, flea markets, etc.) a talented high school or art school artist will often sell quite accomplished paintings for very little. Before I retired from teaching high school art and had some galleries, I sold my work quite reasonably, so you might also contact art teachers. About framing...it is incredibly expensive to have anything custom framed. I would stay away from custom framing, even if you have a coupon. If you buy oil paintings (or acrylic) on canvas or board, you will eliminate the need for a matt and glass which is a big savings. I order all my frames from a company in NC at a reasonable price. I am particularily partial to the plein aire frames --they make everything look great! Just google to find an internet framer, or if its ok I'll be glad to name my source. I know this is long, but art and painting are my passion.
