Don't Forget The Camera!

My husband is hosting an Open House late tonight, so I've been going through our long-boxed photos and sorting them into order. I was surprised to see several of our first apartment--the extravagant draperies I made from a $5 bolt of cloth, our truly vintage kitchen with its built-in porcelain drainboard, the table for two in the corner of the living room. Aaaah, memories.

Take lots of photos when you remodel. Take the time to go through the house before you start ripping out the nasty carpet. Keep the camera in the toolbox and whip it out mid-progress. You'll be so grateful later that you did. After working on a project for weeks, you forget what it looked like when you started. Trust me! Our second house (in and out in 9 months) was so disgusting we couldn't describe it in words; yet we were working too hard to take pictures. I told my husband that period of our lives was a lot like childbirth--I know a lot of dirty work happened, but the awfulness has faded to a fuzzy glow and all I remember is the beautiful end result.

One of the best house-in-progress journals I've seen is called 1902 Victorian. The author has designed an incredible site with photos from beginning to end. It's nice to remodel without getting your hands dirty: visit 1902 Victorian and start daydreaming.

I am in the throes of selling a condo, and this is one of those questions at the top of my head.

This is the first place I ever owned for myself.

It is also the place my husband and I spent the first 20 months of our marriage.

What pictures will I wish I had 20 years from now?

Ruth, I took only a few photos: one of the bedroom, the kitchen, the living room, the study, and the outside of the building where we had built a snowman. I think I also had one of our first Christmas tree. I guess I put so much effort into making our first home, I didn't want to forget anything. And now I can go back and laugh at my decorating mistakes, or remember which pieces of furniture we found on our honeymoon and yard sales.

Aww, thanks.

I love taking pictures. I'm always hopping away to grab the camera while Darwin's not looking. When our camera broke (before I got a new one), I felt so naked! :)
