A Satisfying Hobby: Painting Furniture

I think Garner Dodson and I would have made fine friends.

Her advice on furnishing the new home:

"But in passing I want to remark that it [secondhand furniture] is an ideal hobby for mobile wives and mothers.

Not only can you save hundreds of dollars on your furniture, but you can also fill many an otherwise lonely day looking through secondhand shops and attending auctions for what you need."

--from Making The Most Of Every Move (p. 164) a vintage book I discovered at the library

We bought this armoire from a friend for $100. I don't have a place to put the TV and stereo equipment in the new house, and the living room needs something tall for interest.

My husband thinks it looks too knotty, so I plan to paint or stain it before we move!

Well, I'm afraid I've made a big oops. I glazed it with a soft black stain mixture. It looked better before, knots and all. Now it looks too flat.

I'm trying to remind myself that nothing ever looks great with only one coat of something. I'm going to take some 000 steel wool and rub some of the glaze off the trim pieces, then give it a few generous coats of wax. Maybe it will look better with a slight sheen. : (

Not to be a downer, but I liked the knotty look. I'm sure you'll have it looking just right for your room soon, though.

Very pretty and I'm sure you'll find a way to perfect the new finish. It looks remarkably similar to some flat-pack pieces I got at Target this past year (and they still seem to sell), so you may be able to find ohter items in the future if you so please.

Such a deal! It will look great in your new home - can't wait to see how the Meredith-touch adds even more!

This is actually a made-in-Mexico piece from an armoire store downtown. A friend-of-a-friend was moving and sold it to me for one-sixth what she paid originally.

Meredith, you're the queen of bargains. $100 for this piece?! I love it! the hardware is great. Really fits your french country ideas.

This is beautiful! I have been hunting for an armoire for our TV so we don't have to look at it. :) Ours sits in a corner by the fireplace; so we have limited space, and every time I have found an armoire that fits (on craigslit) I am too late. You've inspired me to keep looking. My husband and I have always tried to get solid wood and stain it.

Debbie, I'm not really going "French Country" all the way; it's just that the colors I keep finding seem more that style.

I doubt my mishmash of used furniture fits any decorating style!

Wow, the items you find are incredible. Here in Michigan, the resale shops and Salvation Army are way too overpriced. Even our yard sales are ridiculous. DH and I went to a subdivision sale this weekend. A woman had $3.50 on a used 3-ring black binder. I think a vacation South for yard sale season might be in order.

Mish-mash is best : ) Not too matchy-matchy. But cohesive. Your style is great, whatever you call it.

That is a great find for $100. You'll have to show the finished product.
