Energy Policy

Since this fall's gas hike, I've been reading about the energy crisis of the late 1970's. I just completed Rosalynn Carter's biography. She notes that President Carter ordered that the thermostats in all government buildings, including their own private quarters in the White House, be set to 65 degrees during the day and 55 degrees at night. We don't even drop ours that low at night! Mrs. Carter recalls secretaries typing with gloves, and one of the housekeepers presenting her with a package of kneelength thermals to wear under her skirts. She had shopped for some herself, and picked up a few for the First Lady while she was at it.
